Movements begin with the telling of untold stories

About

The Media Mobilizing Project (MMP) exists to build a community media infrastructure for the growing movement to end poverty. Through the powerful combination of communications and organizing, we clarify the issues at stake and inspire and unite those who have a vested interest in change. By sharing our stories, we end the isolation of our communities and the sense that our struggles are separate from each other. Together, we develop the leaders and the networks we need to address the root causes of the problems we face. Media and communications act as the central nervous system of this movement -- a broad-based social movement to end poverty, led by poor and working people united across color lines.

MMP's grassroots media infrastructure produces and distributes the real stories of our region. People are the foundation of this infrastructure, and MMP conducts regular video, radio, and web trainings for workers, immigrants, youth and community leaders. Many of these leaders get involved in our ongoing media programs, which include a television show, several radio shows, and a system of interconnected weblogs and public computer centers.

MMP engages in collaborative campaigns and media projects with organizations and leaders of Greater Philadelphia's poor and working people. The media we produce shares stories that are systemically submerged from view, strengthens organizations' bases and campaigns, and builds networks that connect organizations and leaders across issues, locations, and identities.

MMP is building a powerful membership base of committed and connected leaders. Our multi-level political education and leadership development program prepares new generations of organizers to devise effective strategies for lasting social change.

MMP organizes around media policy issues that affect our communities, including digital inclusion, municipal broadband deployment, net neutrality and media ownership. It is essential that poor and working people have access to media and communication tools, because the right to free speech means little without the right to be heard.
